Motion and Forces

The theme of this module is the study of motion; how it may be measured, analysed and understood using simple experiments and mathematical models. To build an understanding, some basic concepts are required: displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration and force. The activities exploit the use of ICT to stimulate thinking about how these concepts are used to understand the motion of objects due to various forces acting on them. There are four types of activities:

  • Data logging - Four laboratory experiments involving measurements of distance, velocity, acceleration and force.
  • Video measurement - Four data-video activities for studying motion and obtaining measurements of velocity and acceleration.
  • Simulation - Visual aids to assist understanding of the concepts of velocity, acceleration and force and the interpretation of the data-logging experiments involving motion.
  • Modelling - Models to show the relationship between velocity, acceleration and force in examples of uniform velocity, uniform acceleration and terminal velocity.
